Contextual Signal

A contextual signal is a data point used to assess the circumstances of an authentication attempt or session.

Definition

A contextual signal is any relevant piece of information used by an authentication or risk evaluation system to understand the circumstances surrounding a login, session, or transaction. Examples include device fingerprint, geolocation, IP reputation, access time, network type, browser integrity, operating system health, previous session behavior, user velocity, resource sensitivity, or abnormal interaction patterns. Contextual signals are not necessarily strong authenticators on their own, but they can materially influence authentication decisions when aggregated and evaluated properly. Their usefulness depends on quality, freshness, explainability, and resistance to spoofing.

Contextual signals are the raw inputs that make contextual and adaptive authentication possible.
