Secret Management is the operational and technical practice of protecting passwords, keys, tokens, API secrets, and machine credentials throughout their lifecycle. It aims to avoid hardcoded secrets, uncontrolled duplication, scattered storage, and weak access control around high-value technical credentials.

Secrets must be treated as governed assets with ownership, controlled storage, rotation and revocation. Moving a static secret into a vault is useful, but it does not solve excessive privilege or a missing lifecycle.
