Step-Up Authentication is the process of requiring stronger or additional authentication when risk, sensitivity, or context justifies it.

Definition

Step-Up Authentication is an authentication pattern in which a user who has already authenticated is required to provide additional proof of identity before gaining access to a more sensitive resource, performing a higher-risk action, or continuing under suspicious circumstances. Step-up decisions may be triggered by contextual risk signals, transaction value, device changes, privilege elevation, policy requirements, or access to regulated data. This model allows organizations to avoid imposing the highest friction on every session while still protecting sensitive operations with stronger assurance. Step-Up Authentication is a core mechanism in contextual, adaptive, and transaction-aware security architectures.

It provides a practical way to apply stronger controls where they matter most without making every access path equally burdensome.
