Hybrid IAM Architecture
A hybrid IAM architecture combines identity and access capabilities operated across different environments: SaaS, cloud, on-premises, sometimes several clouds, legacy systems and external identity services.

Definition
A hybrid IAM architecture is an identity and access setup whose building blocks do not all live in the same place. It typically mixes on-premises identity sources, SaaS IGA, a legacy directory, cloud access management, internal and SaaS applications, PAM, APIs and cloud workloads. Hybridisation is about responsibilities as much as hosting: which system is authoritative for a piece of data, where decisions are evaluated, which flows cross which boundaries, and which dependencies bind the components together. A hybrid architecture is not necessarily a temporary step towards an all-cloud model; it can be a perfectly legitimate target when regulation, application lifecycles, latency expectations or the value of a legacy system justify it. What separates a controlled hybrid architecture from an accidental one is clarity: data authority, direction of flows, protection of those flows, dependency management and operating conditions.
Why it matters
Most real information systems are hybrid. Designing and operating a hybrid IAM architecture deliberately avoids making identity security depend on a homogeneity that will never arrive.
The Ariovis perspective
"Hybrid" is not a synonym for "unfinished migration". Real information systems are often hybrid because constraints, lifecycles and application needs differ. Forcing artificial homogeneity can cost more and create more complexity than deliberately owning a hybrid architecture. The goal is less about having every component in the same place than about knowing who is authoritative, how data flows, how those flows are protected, how dependencies are managed and how the system is operated.

Common pitfalls
- A common mistake is treating hybrid as a provisional state, and therefore never documenting or properly operating flows that will remain in place for years.
