Writeback
Writeback is the return of identity or lifecycle data from a downstream system back into an upstream or central identity source.
Definition
Writeback refers to the process by which data originating or changing in a downstream application, platform, or directory is propagated back to an upstream system or central identity source. Examples include writing generated usernames back to HR, returning mailbox attributes to a directory, storing target identifiers centrally, or propagating manager-approved values upstream. Writeback can improve lifecycle coherence and correlation quality, but it also introduces governance complexity around data ownership, precedence, conflict handling, and audit trails. Not every attribute should flow backward simply because it technically can.
