Context-Aware Authentication

Context-Aware Authentication is an authentication model that evaluates environmental, behavioral, technical, and business context when determining how to verify identity.

Definition

Context-Aware Authentication is closely related to Context-Based Authentication and refers to an authentication model in which the system actively interprets the surrounding circumstances of an access request before deciding what assurance level is required. These circumstances may include device state, network characteristics, user habits, role sensitivity, workload location, transaction type, resource classification, and temporal patterns. In practice, context-aware authentication is often implemented through risk engines, adaptive policies, and step-up challenges. It is especially relevant in enterprise environments where the same user may access low-risk and high-risk resources under very different conditions.

Why it matters

It enables more intelligent authentication decisions by taking into account not only who the user is, but also under what conditions access is being requested.
