Definition

The European Digital Identity Wallet, or EUDI Wallet, is the wallet defined by the European Union's digital identity framework to let a person hold identity data and electronic attestations of attributes, and present them selectively to public or private relying parties. For an IAM audience, the useful notions are the ones it makes concrete: a digital identity bound to a verified person, attributes and attestations issued by trusted issuers, selective presentation controlled by the holder, trust frameworks that let a relying party verify what it receives, and interoperability across member states. A wallet can strengthen identity proofing and onboarding journeys, and can feed attributes into a customer or partner identity journey, but it does not replace identity and access management, customer identity and access management, or identity federation.

Why it matters

Identity wallets change how organisations obtain and verify information about a person, which affects onboarding and identity proofing more than authorization.

The Ariovis perspective

Identity wallets potentially change the way an organisation obtains and verifies certain information about a person. They do not remove the need to govern what that person can then do inside the information system. Proof of identity and authorization remain two different problems.

Common pitfalls

  • Presenting a wallet as a replacement for IAM confuses proving who someone is with governing what that person may do.
