Event-Driven Provisioning is a provisioning model where lifecycle actions are triggered by discrete events published by one or more upstream systems.

Definition

Event-Driven Provisioning is an architecture in which provisioning actions are initiated in response to explicit lifecycle or business events, such as onboarding completion, manager assignment, contract activation, application subscription approval, project staffing, access revocation, or partner offboarding. These events may originate from HR, ITSM, ERP, CRM, vendor systems, workflow platforms, or custom business applications. Event-driven models can improve reactivity, decouple systems, and better reflect real operational triggers than rigid batch-driven provisioning. They are especially useful when different identity populations depend on different business processes. However, they require strong event governance, ordering logic, deduplication, idempotency, retry handling, and visibility across the event chain.
