Provisioning

HR-Driven Provisioning

HR-Driven Provisioning is a provisioning model in which HR data acts as the primary trigger and reference source for workforce identity lifecycle events.

Definition

HR-Driven Provisioning is an IAM model where workforce identity creation, update, and deprovisioning are triggered primarily from HR events such as hire, transfer, leave of absence, organizational change, or termination. This model is common because HR often serves as the authoritative source for legal identity, employment status, organizational placement, and manager relationships. When implemented well, HR-driven flows improve consistency and reduce ambiguity in workforce lifecycle handling. However, the model also has practical limits: HR systems are not always event-perfect, not all lifecycle signals originate in HR, and overloading HR with operational IAM timing expectations can create friction and unrealistic dependency.

Why it matters

HR-Driven Provisioning is foundational in workforce IAM because employment status is usually central to identity legitimacy and baseline access logic.

The Ariovis perspective

Ariovis promotes automation that remains explainable and recoverable: explicit rules, approvals where needed, logs, error handling and recovery mechanisms.

Common pitfalls

  • A common pitfall is assuming that all relevant lifecycle events should originate from HR in real time, even when other operational domains own the actual trigger conditions.

These concepts matter most inside a real project.
