Federation

Artifact Binding

Artifact Binding is a federation pattern where an opaque reference is sent first and the service provider later retrieves the related identity data.

Definition

Artifact Binding is a SAML exchange style in which the identity provider redirects the user with a compact opaque artifact rather than immediately transporting all assertion data through the browser. The service provider then uses that artifact to retrieve the necessary identity information.

The Ariovis perspective

Federation is an architecture choice, not a product checkbox. Ariovis assesses protocols, trust relationships, application constraints and migration paths before defining the target.
